Look for maker marks on the underside, and check rims and handles for hairline cracks; the listing photos and notes show condition honestly.
Sets are lovely when complete, but single pieces are often easier to use. A single big bowl on a console or a pair of candlesticks on a dining table needs nothing else around it.
